I know I have had moments where I sang, “I am a child of God” but secretly wondering hmm, am I His child? It is so easy to put up facades when we are around people and hide what we are really feeling but God sees our hearts.
So today, I want to tell you who the Bible says is a child of God. Romans 8:14 says, “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God”.
If you read that chapter you will see that those who live in accordance with the sinful nature live in animosity to God and that leads to death. However, those who live according to the word of God are freed from the sinful nature and this leads to life. God cannot have any part in death because He reproduces what He is and that is life. So if we are His children we will have His life within us and the certainty of eternity spent with Him.
I find it fascinating that the chapter that tells us who God’s children are, is dealing with the consequences of sin and godly living. So what makes us children of God is determined by how we live out our lives.
We can sing, “I am a child of God” all we want but for as long as our lives are not being lived in accordance with the word of God then the word says we are not his children. God’s children are those who not only love God with their mouths but with their lives. They honour God with every single decision of their lives. If the Spirit of God says, go left they go left. If the word of God says, let go of that because it is a sin, they drop it like its hot.
I am not saying you won’t make mistakes along the way but you have someone who has been given to you to help you on your journey to living a godly life and that is the Holy Spirit.
Roman 8:11 says, “The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you”.
Isn’t that good news?! We have the Spirit of God who gives life living inside us. He gives us life by teaching us how to live our lives right. He is doing a work within us according to Philippians 1:6. He has taught me a lot of things and is still teaching me all kinds of things, but it is up to me to listen to Him and allow myself to be led by Him. When we do that, we can be certain that we will grow in Christ likeness and grow in certainty that we are children of God as we begin to see God’s nature becoming more evident in us.
Have a blessed week!
