Passion Translation, Hebrews 8:10:- “For here is the covenant I will one day establish with the people of Israel: I will embed my laws within their thoughts, and fasten them onto their hearts. I will be their loyal God and they will be My loyal people”.
We have been meditating on this verse since last week. I spent some time thinking about the wording. Reading the full chapter of Hebrews 8 to get some context and re-reading the verse. I will share a little about the verse. I have broken it up into five sections so we can really take the time to let God speak to us though each part of the verse. So this is Part One. P.s. I wrote these as one post so they flow from each other.
Part One:
The verse starts off with God saying, “For here is the covenant I will one day establish with the people of Israel…”
What covenant was He referring to? If we read the earlier verses of the chapter we will see that the author was talking about the frailty of the first covenant. The first covenant was the law which was given to Israel through Moses which God inscribed on the stone tablets. The law put a demand on humanity which we could not cash in. We fell short of being perfected under the law. Therefore, God as He took a look at the law, He spoke to the future generations of Israel that He would one day establish a covenant with them.
In the Old Testament, the people of Israel were God’s chosen people. However, in the New Testament because of the new covenant that has come through Jesus Christ, we are children of God even if we are not Israelites by descent. Ephesians 1:5 says, “God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure”. It was God’s will, from the very beginning, that we be adopted into His family through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ who died for our sins, Jews and Gentiles alike.
So the new covenant that God is referring to is the blood sealed covenant (see Matthew 26:28) that Jesus died to bring us into. This new covenant is beautiful because no longer are we justified by our works, strict obedience to the law or our goodness, but we are called righteous because Jesus is righteous. It is a new covenant where grace says we are holy even when we know we are far from it.
When Jesus died on the cross, the word says He became sin. That means He became the very thing that He came to eradicate. So that in Him, sin for mankind was punished. He paid the penalty, the price for our sins on the cross that we could enter into the new covenant with God and have peace with God because our sins are forgiven.
That is a brief outline of the new covenant. We may cover it in more detail another time. The covenant we have with Jesus Christ as our mediator is the covenant that God is speaking about in the verse. Whereby we are in relationship with God because of Jesus Christ. God is after a relationship with us, He wants to fellowship with us.
Be blessed.
Part 2 is coming tomorrow 🙂
