God’s Beloved

We have been talking about our relationship with our heavenly Father. We talked about His love for us, which is undeniable and which is woven all through scripture. We talked about how we are not in trouble and God is always looking out for us. We also talked about how God is not mad or angry at us and how He wants to help us and draw us closer to Himself. We have danced around the subject of why we struggle to see God as our heavenly Father and why we pull away from Him instead of drawing close.

We can all take a tangent here and blame our earthly dads who are flawed and imperfect or we can find that male father figure that let us down and point the finger at them. But ultimately, we are called to bring everything to Jesus and let Him heal whatever wounds we may be carrying and also we are to forgive those who have wronged us not so we can let them off the hook but so we can let ourselves off the hook that is keeping us tethered to the past.

Our earthly fathers and father figures were never meant to be perfect. They are human like us. That is not to excuse any wrong doing or bad behaviour but its just a fact of life. So we can stay stuck there or we can say, “Papa God, how do I learn to trust You as a Father?”

Romans 8:14-16 gives some insight on how we can grow in our relationship with our heavenly Father. It says, “The mature children of God are those who are moved by the impulses of the Holy Spirit. And you did not receive the “spirit of religious duty,” leading you back into the fear of never being good enough. But you have received the “Spirit of full acceptance,” enfolding you into the family of God. And you will never feel orphaned, for as he rises up within us, our spirits join him in saying the words of tender affection, “Beloved Father!” For the Holy Spirit makes God’s fatherhood real to us as he whispers into our innermost being, “You are God’s beloved child!”

Isn’t that amazing? It is Holy Spirit who makes God’s Fatherhood real to us. So if we are having trouble accepting God’s Fatherhood to us, it is easy to point at other people and blame them but really, how close are you to Holy Spirit? Our verse starts off by talking about the mature children of God. Could it be that immaturity causes us to be insensitive to Holy Spirit and therefore it makes it difficult for us to get revelation of who our heavenly Father is to us? By “immaturity” I don’t mean as a facet of age, but rather, immaturity of the spirit.

When we remain spiritual babies feeding on milk, the meat of the word is difficult to swallow and our revelations of God remain shallow. But the more we pursue God, the deeper we anchor ourselves in Him, the more we obey His word instead of questioning Him at every turn and the quicker we respond without expecting understanding as a pre-condition to obedience, we mature in our spirit. As we mature, Holy Spirit does not need to say the same thing 20 times before we get it. A simple shift in His Presence is enough for us to realise something is off and needs to be addressed. When we walk in sync with Holy Spirit, Hold Spirit is able to bear witness in our spirit as to our spiritual reality. The more we grow and mature, the more we allow Holy Spirit to speak into our lives, the closer we get to Papa God.

Jesus is the password that opens the door, Holy Spirit is the one who ushers us closer and whispers in our heart, “You are God’s beloved child”. As He does this, our hearts are open to the One who loves us most. Our very own Papa God.

So this week, how about we ask God to examine our hearts and help us locate where we are and how we can submit to Holy Spirit in a new way so we can receive revelation that we are God’s beloved children and what that means to us personally. We need Holy Spirit. We can’t figure it out on our own. Mentally we may understand that’s what God’s word says, but we need a revelation deep in our very being that this is who we are, God’s beloved children. It will change everything!

Love and blessings,

Melissa Tsingano.
