Our verse for the week are from 1 John 5:7-8 NLT which says, “So we have these three witnesses— the Spirit, the water, and the blood—and all three agree”. Hence our title: The three witnesses.
There is something about that verse that I could not quite escape when I read it. I find that usually when I do a double take on a verse its because there is something in it that God wants to reveal. So let’s have a look at our verse for this week…
The Apostle John, who is widely believed to have penned the epistle, found it necessary to go into the detail that we have three witnesses that attest to the authenticity of Jesus Christ. I recently was scrolling down my news feed and I found someone trolling a certain entities post and saying that Jesus did not exist. I wanted to respond but I could not think of a response that would not end in a blood bath so I left it alone. However, it really bothered me so I prayed for that person that God find a way to show him that Jesus Christ is real and the claims made about Him in the Bible are all legitimate.
Perhaps there is someone reading this today who is not entirely sure that Jesus is real. Without looking at external sources, let us have a look at the verse that we have here today.
The message version says in 1 John 5:6-8, “Jesus—the Divine Christ! He experienced a life-giving birth and a death-killing death. Not only birth from the womb, but baptismal birth of his ministry and sacrificial death. And all the while the Spirit is confirming the truth, the reality of God’s presence at Jesus’ baptism and crucifixion, bringing those occasions alive for us. A triple testimony: the Spirit, the Baptism, the Crucifixion. And the three in perfect agreement”.
