We have just finished talking about God our righteous Judge. I’ll admit that had some intense moments. However, we can’t expect God to change the standard for us, that would make Him unrighteous and unfair. So we need to change to meet the standard. The Bible says we perish for lack of knowledge so we need to know what God expects from us so we can adjust our lives and align them with His word. How terrible it would be to live life lukewarm thinking you are all good only to be spit out by God, Revelations 3:16.
This week, we are going to be talking about Jesus the Son of God. Luke 1:31-35 says, “Listen carefully: you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. He will be great and eminent and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob (Israel) forever, and of His kingdom there shall be no end.” [Isaiah 9:6, 7; Daniel 2:44] Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin and have no intimacy with any man?” Then the angel replied to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you [like a cloud]; for that reason the holy (pure, sinless) Child shall be called the Son of God. [Exodus 40:34; Isaiah 7:14].”
Sometimes as Christians we are so used to the story of Jesus that we don’t realise that it takes faith to believe that Jesus is the Son of God. I have had some encounters with people who do not believe that Jesus is the Son of God. They think He was a good man or a prophet or some believe He didn’t exist. The last one is a bit farfetched. History proves His existence. There is contemporaneous evidence of His existence in books and writings outside of the Bible so that position is not supported by historical facts.
While we cannot question His existence, some question His deity. Was or is Jesus the Son of God? The Bible tells us that He is. Most importantly, there are many verses that talk about Him all the way from the Old Testament to the New Testament. Our scripture above tells us that Jesus is the Son of God. I picked the Amplified version as it links it back to the Old Testament. So what does Isaiah 9:6-7 say?
Isaiah 9:6-7 says, “For to us a Child shall be born, to us a Son shall be given; And the government shall be upon His shoulder, And His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. [Isaiah 25:1; 40:9-11; Matthew 28:18; Luke 2:11] There shall be no end to the increase of His government and of peace, [He shall rule] on the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From that time forward and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this. [Daniel 2:44; 1 Corinthians 15:25-28; Hebrews 1:8].””
That is from the Amplified version again so you can cross reference for yourself and see how the Bible all connects together. Isaiah was speaking to the future. “For us a Child shall be born, to us a Son shall be given”. Jesus was born for us (Hebrews 2:14-15), and He was given to us by Papa God, John 3:16.
Isaiah 7:14 says, “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Listen carefully, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and she will call his name Immanuel (God with us). [Isaiah 9:6; Jeremiah 31:22; Micah 5:3-5; Matthew 1:22, 23].”
What a wonderful time we live in. People in the Old Testament looked with hope towards the future. We, in the New Testament, live in a blessed time where we have encountered the Son of God and experienced His love, power, authority and dominion. Jesus is the Son of God.
We will continue this next week.
Love and blessings,
Melissa Tsingano.
