Last week I finished off by saying a day would come when we must all face the consequences for our actions. We are still talking about God as our Judge, I have to break it up so I don’t rush through it and leave you confused or worse, leave you traumatised! Lol. I will, however, preface this post by saying that what I am sharing with you are my views based on my understanding of Scripture. Someone may think differently. But that’s the mystery of God’s word.
We understand in part but we don’t really know everything. However, we will all find out at the same time, in real time, when Christ returns how some of these things work! So where possible, air on the side of caution so that when Judgment Day comes, it will be a good day for you. I think it’s Albert Camus who said, “I would rather live my life as if there is a God and die to find out there isn’t, than live my life as if there isn’t and die to find out there is.” Just putting it out there.
Anyway so about judgement, I grew up learning that one day, on Judgement Day, God was going to judge every single thing I have ever done, thought, imagined or should have done but didn’t do. There would be a big screen TV, bigger than what we have in our tiny movie theatres. A big screen TV with full 3D, HD whatever is needed to make that picture crystal clear from every angle of the room. On Judgement Day, God would bring up all of my sins, big or small and images or video clips would appear on the big screen TV. I would hang my head in shame and guilt as I faced up to all my mistakes, publicly, in front of every single person who has ever lived.
I think this was in part informed by Luke 12:2-5 which says, “Everything hidden and covered up will soon be exposed. For the facade is falling down, and nothing will be kept secret for long. Whatever you have spoken in private will be public knowledge, and what you have whispered secretly behind closed doors will be broadcast far and wide for all to hear. “Listen, my beloved friends, don’t fear those who may want to take your life but can do nothing more. It’s true that they may kill your body, but they have no power over your soul. The one you must fear is God, for he has both the power to take your life and the authority to cast your soul into hell. Yes, the only one you need to fear is God.”
Things that are hidden shall be exposed and brought into the light. But I do not think this is just in relation to Judgment Day. I think the above verses are a warning to us to live lives that are pleasing to God because we cannot trick God into thinking we are saved or trick Him into thinking we love Him when we don’t. Proverbs 21:2-4 says, “We may think we’re right all the time, but God thoroughly examines our motives. It pleases God more when we demonstrate godliness and justice than when we merely offer him a sacrifice. Arrogance, superiority, and pride are the fruits of sin.”
It is arrogant to think we can outsmart God. So many people talk about the donations they make to charity and the “good things” they do. But God examines the motives of our hearts. Why are you doing it? Are you trying to bypass the Lordship of Jesus and buy your way into heaven? God knows our motives.
Anyway, back to Judgment Day; my picture of Judgment Day was rather grim and it for sure made me think twice before doing bad things! I was terrified. But I don’t think God wants His children to be scared of Judgment Day. We are to rejoice because of what Jesus has done for us! Because remember from when we started this topic, judgment is only “bad”, if you have done something wrong haha! Judgment is a good thing. It concludes a matter and sets things right! There are so many broken things in the world and as Christians we should be longing for God to set things right. Judgment is part of that process. So, what is Judgement Day going to look like for us as Christians?
Psalm 103:12 says, “He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west.” Ephesians 1:7 says, “Since we are now joined to Christ, we have been given the treasures of redemption by his blood—the total cancellation of our sins—all because of the cascading riches of his grace.” Colossians 1:12-14 says, “Your hearts can soar with joyful gratitude when you think of how God made you worthy to receive the glorious inheritance freely given to us by living in the light. He has rescued us completely from the tyrannical rule of darkness and has translated us into the kingdom realm of his beloved Son. For in the Son all our sins are canceled and we have the release of redemption through his very blood.”
These verses have something in common. They tell us that when we are joined with Christ, when we believe and have put our faith in Jesus, our sins are forgiven, cancelled and removed from us. So I believe that as Christians, we do not get judged for our sins because they have already been judged in Jesus Christ. Jesus paid the price for our sins, past, present and future! Praise God for that! God is not keeping score of our sins. He knows we will mess up but for as long as we keep confessing our sins, as long as we keep getting up and running back to Him, He will be faithful to forgive us (1 John 1:9).
So, do we just get to eat popcorn and watch unsaved people’s stuff on the big screen in heaven on Judgment Day? No. We get a different judgment. We will talk about that next week. But in the meantime, praise Jesus for what He did for us on the cross. He took God’s judgment and punishment for our sins so we wouldn’t have to! How wonderful is that!!! Wooohooo! Thank You Jesus!!
Love and blessings,
Melissa Tsingano.
