Righteous and Just

Last week we looked at how God does not change and if we are waiting on God to change, we are wasting our time! We are the ones who need to change and align ourselves with God and what God has asked us to do.

This week we will look at the righteousness of God. In the Bible God’s righteousness and justness are often used interchangeably, so a reference to God being just, is a reference to His righteousness.

Deuteronomy 32:4 says, “He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.” God’s righteousness refers to how God is perfectly just, holy, and fair in and of Himself and this is reflected in all His actions and decisions. God does not just do righteous things, He is righteous. He Himself is the standard of what is right or wrong, what is just and unjust and what is fair and unfair. God is morally perfect. In His thoughts and attitudes. In His dealings with all creation. God always sets things right.

Psalms 7:11-13 says, “God, your righteousness is revealed when you judge. Because of the strength of your forgiveness, your anger does not break out every day. Yet if one does not repent, you will not relent to sharpen your shining sword. You have an arsenal of lethal weapons that you’ve prepared for them. You have bent and strung your bow, making your judgment-arrows shafts of burning fire.”

We all deserve hell but because of what Jesus did, we get saved from hell through faith in Jesus. There are no good works that will wipe away the debt of our sin from our lives, nothing but the blood of Jesus can do that for us. God’s righteousness demanded that our sin be punished, that is what is right and fair. God’s mercy said, “I’ll suffer in their place” and took the punishment for us on the cross. We don’t go to heaven because God magically waved His hand and all is well. A precious, holy price was paid on the cross. If we do not honour and value what happened on the cross, we are disrespecting Jesus and the blood He shed for you and me.

God is righteous. His righteousness had to find expression in dealing with us and our sin. Otherwise, if God did not deal with sin, He wouldn’t be just. He would be corrupt because He would be breaking His own word which says “the wages of sin is death”, Romans 6:23. So God’s righteousness required that there be death for our sins and Jesus stood in our place and died in our place.

Psalm 11:7 says, “But remember this: Yahweh is the Righteous One who loves justice, and every godly one will gaze upon his face!” God loves justice. If you have been wronged, as long as you do not go taking matters in your hands, you can trust that God will ensure that justice is served. It may not happen when, how or where we want it but, in His righteousness, God will bring justice.

However, Ezekiel 33:11 says, “As surely as I live, says the Sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of wicked people. I only want them to turn from their wicked ways so they can live. Turn! Turn from your wickedness, O people of Israel! Why should you die?” See how wonderfully beautiful God is? Even when we deserve death, God tries to get us to turn and see the error in our ways but in the end righteousness and justice will prevail.

This is good news because we have all wronged someone who is waiting for justice and we want mercy for our sins! What we must remember is that there are consequences for sins. If you do something that requires prison time, God will forgive you and you are 100% loved, but you will still go to jail. Otherwise, every criminal would repent to avoid serving their prison sentence, where is the justice in that!

Jeremiah 9:24 says, “If you’re going to boast, then boast about this: that you understand my ways and know my heart, and you know that I am Yahweh. Let the wise boast in knowing how I demonstrate infinite love, true justice, and righteousness, for these are the things that delight my heart,” declares Yahweh.” God delights in doing what is right.

We’ll continue this next week.

Love and blessings
