Dunamis

Last week we talked about Luke 24:49 where Jesus said, “And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.”

We talked about how the Holy Spirit is powerful beyond measure. Now to see what happened when Holy Spirit came, we go to Acts 2:2-5 TPT which says, “Suddenly they heard the sound of a violent blast of wind rushing into the house from out of the heavenly realm. The roar of the wind was so overpowering it was all anyone could bear! Then all at once a pillar of fire appeared before their eyes.  It separated into tongues of fire that engulfed each one of them. They were all filled and equipped with the Holy Spirit and were inspired to speak in tongues—empowered by the Spirit to speak in languages they had never learned!

So Holy Spirit came as a roaring mighty windstorm, Acts 2:2 NLT. Not a quiet, peaceful dove. My pastors say the roaring mighty windstorm would have blown the feathers off any dove! Haha! Holy Spirit didn’t come quietly. Holy Spirit did not sneak in and say, “If it’s ok, can I interrupt what you are doing for a second?” They were waiting for Him and Holy Spirit came and did what He came to do. He filled them with power!

It is easy to gloss over what happened in that room but imagine this; the disciples are sitting in a room, waiting for the Holy Spirit. They have no idea what to expect or any point of reference. They are nervously chatting to each other talking about the events from the last few weeks and suddenly, with no announcement, no warning, they hear the sound of a violent blast of wind. I imagine the whole room was shaking, they could see each other’s mouths move but could not hear a word.

They were probably terrified and just as suddenly as the wind started, a pillar of fire appears. They probably saw their lives flash before their eyes. But there is something about the Presence of God. As much as you want to run away, there is something that draws you in. With eyes open wide in disbelief over what they were seeing, the pillar of fire separated into flames of fire that engulfed them. Didn’t sit on their heads all pretty. It engulfed, submerged them and they were filled with the Holy Spirit. Baptised in the Holy Spirit and they began to speak in tongues.

Now I imagine as chaotic as it was with them all speaking in tongues, there was a peace and a joy that filled the room. They looked at each realising that the power they had been waiting for had come upon them. They could not stay locked up in the room. It was time to go do the works of the Kingdom.

So who is Holy Spirit? Definitely not a small dove. My pastors have taught me that when I am in the battle with the devil, I don’t need a dove on my team. I need some real devil crushing power and that is who Holy Spirit is. Holy Spirit is powerful. Mighty. Strong. God.

The word “power” in Luke 24:49, is the Greek word G1411 in the Strongs Hebrew Lexicon, which is “dunamis” meaning strength and power. It means power for performing miracles, moral power and excellence of soul, power and influence which belong to riches and wealth, power and resources arising from numbers, and it is power consisting in or resting upon armies, forces and hosts.

Now that’s a lot of power!

Have a good week!

Love and blessings,

Melissa Tsingano.
