God sees.

Last week we looked at how Holy Spirit is everywhere. Now I have a funny story about this. It involves my younger brother. Now you have to understand that we have a 13year age gap, and he must have been around 4 years old at the time.

My mom used to take us to church every Sunday, so we went to church on a Sunday as usual. Came home. Turns out my little brother had learnt in Sunday School (kids ministry) how God is everywhere and can see everything, so he had some follow up questions.

They were all kid questions like, “Does he see me when I am asleep?” “What about when I am in the loo?” Obviously phrased in his 4 year old language at the time and we had to explain to him that yes, God sees everything, even when you are in the loo! For some reason, this really put the fear of God in him for a while. It put him on the straight and narrow. He was the most behaved 4 year old but you could tell it was a struggle haha.

I, being the great big sister that I am, took it upon myself to remind him that God was watching when I could see him start to struggle with his salvation and I could sense the naughty spirit try lay hold of him and he’d start behaving again. It was fun for me because it got results. What can I say, I’m a goal-oriented person and I need Jesus, haha!

This poor kid was trying so hard to be good so after a few days we had to sit him down and explain that yes, God can see everything, but you have to remember that God is not out to get you. He loves you so very much! He was ok after that. He is still walking with the Lord so he’s doing alright. He wasn’t too traumatized.

See God doesn’t tell us that He never leaves us nor forsakes us so we can be looking over our shoulder in fear. So, we can try to be good in our own strength. None of us are good. Outside of Jesus it is hard to do good. God does not want us to obey Him out of fear. “Ooh God is watching; I better straighten up.” No. But at the same time, being aware that God is with us, needs to put a holy fear in us.

God sees everything. I believe He stays close to us out of love for us, Hebrews 13:5 and to keep an eye on us because the devil really do be crazy. He’ll kill you in an instant if given half a chance. God is faithfully and carefully watching over us to cover and protect us because He loves us, see Romans 8:31-39 and Psalm 121:3-8.

So being aware that Holy Spirit is omnipresent and sees everything, means we get to take a moment to ask ourselves, “Do I really want God to see what I am about to do?” “Do I want Him hearing these thoughts in my head or is it time to change the channel and think about something else?” Being aware of the presence of Holy Spirit in our lives should be enough for us to at least take a second to think through our words, our actions, and our thoughts.

Is what I am about to say honoring to God? Does this line of thinking exalt and glorify God in me? This stuff that I am doing that I don’t want anyone else to know about, God knows about it, what does He think about it? Since I can’t hide from God, how about I bring this to God and ask Him for help? How about I ask Him to help me find a way out? There is always a way out, 1 Corinthians 10:13. Remember Holy Spirit is in that space with you, and He is not trapped or stuck there, so He can help you get out of those places where you feel stuck. He can bring you out into wide open spaces where God’s freedom reigns.

Sometimes we think we are getting away with things thinking God doesn’t mind, He minds. Luke 8:17 says, “For all that is secret will eventually be brought into the open, and everything that is concealed will be brought to light and made known to all.” Holy Spirit is everywhere and sees everything and there will come a day when we need to answer for our actions, 2 Peter 3.

As much as it brings us comfort that Holy Spirit is with us always, it should also put the fear of God in us. That even when no one is watching, God sees. What does God think about this?

Love and blessings,

Melissa Tsingano.
