This week I wanted to start talking about Holy Spirit. We know that Papa God is seated on His throne in Heaven and Jesus is seated on the right hand of the Father. So, we have two thirds of the Godhead in Heaven (which is a real place – thought I’d drop that in there), where is Holy Spirit?
You may realise that I say Holy Spirit instead of the Holy Spirit. I do this for myself, because Holy Spirit is a person and is God just like Papa God and Jesus. Holy Spirit is not an “it”. Holy Spirit is a person. So, the same way I don’t say, the Jesus and the Papa God, I try to avoid saying the Holy Spirit but I do that for me. There’s nothing wrong with saying the Holy Spirit.
Who is Holy Spirit? So far, I have asked two questions and given answers to none. It’s ok, I haven’t forgotten. We will get into all of that. Let’s start right in the beginning. Genesis 1:1-2 says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.”
Right in the beginning, God tells us two things about Himself. One, that He is a Creator and He created the heavens and the earth and two, that He is Spirit, and His Spirit was hovering over the surface of the waters. I think there is a third thing that Genesis 1:1-2 tells us and it is that God is not afraid of dark places.
The verse says the earth was formless and empty and darkness covered the deep waters. Yet, sometimes when we are stuck in dark and empty situations, we feel like we are too far gone for God to reach us. Such lies. Right in the beginning, God reveals Himself as being a God who is not afraid of darkness. A God who hovers over empty places and sees what can be. A God who sees beauty where we sometimes only seek our brokenness and murkiness.
Genesis 1:1-2 tells us where Holy Spirit was. Here on earth. Hovering. Moving. Watching. Waiting. Right from the beginning God tells us who Holy Spirit is. He is God. In Genesis 1:26 it says, “Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us…”. God refers to Himself as “us”. Meaning there is more than one part to Him.
If we look at ourselves, we have three parts to us. We have a body, we have a soul (our mind, will, emotions, memories and so on) and we have a spirit, the part of us that is born again when we accept Jesus. The part of us that comes alive when we believe in Jesus. So this tells us that if we have a spirit and we are made in God’s likeness, then Holy Spirit is as much God as Jesus and Papa God. Just as much as our spirit is as much a part of us as our soul and body. Our God is three in one and Holy Spirit forms part of the Holy Trinity.
So as we talk about Holy Spirit in the days to come, remember that we are talking about God. Not an it. Not an ethereal being that gives us goosebumps sometimes. No, we are talking about Holy Spirit who is the third person of the Godhead.
Love and blessings,
Melissa Tsingano.
