Last week we looked at Abraham and how we are to follow God and trust God and do our part even when we don’t understand. I was thinking about this last night, in every area of life we are happy to trust someone or something but when it comes to God, somehow we struggle. Why is that?
When you are driving, you trust the traffic lights. When they are green, you know its safe to go, when they are red, you know to stop. When we are going somewhere new, we trust our GPS to give us directions. When we are bored, we trust our phones to provide some entertainment. If you don’t think so, watch your reaction on the day you leave your phone at home. Pilots can’t land planes without communicating with the air traffic controllers. They trust the information they are getting is correct and proceed as instructed. Meanwhile, the rest of us trust the pilot to do his job and we are in the back watching a movie relaxing.
Why can’t we be this way with God? Secure in His ability to lead us, guide us and get us to where we need to be. If we look back to the story of Abraham, he may not have been perfect but if there is one thing he did was that he believed God. Genesis 15:6 says, “And Abram believed the Lord, and the Lord counted him as righteous because of his faith.” What did Abraham believe? Genesis 15:4-5 says, “Then the Lord said to him, “No, your servant will not be your heir, for you will have a son of your own who will be your heir.” Then the Lord took Abram outside and said to him, “Look up into the sky and count the stars if you can. That’s how many descendants you will have!”
God spoke to Abraham about his future and Abraham believed it. We have to realise that Abraham was not a young 26 year old man when God was making this promise. Abraham was around 75 years old. So at 75, Abraham believed he would have a son and have so many descendants he would not be able to count them!
When God talks to you about your future, do you believe him? See with Abraham, the bible does not say he went and meditated on it, asked a few friends what they thought or prayed about it. He heard God and he believed God. Sometimes we hide behind over spiritualising things to avoid the burden of carrying the promise. We hear God speak, like the pilot who hears the air traffic controller saying the plane is cleared for landing, but we hesitate and we think if we switch channels and get someone else (ask a friend, pray about it) we may get an answer we are more comfortable with. One that readily makes sense to us.
No, we should be more like Abraham. When God speaks, let’s believe Him. Let us take Him at His word. Do you know how much that blesses God when we just take Him at His word?
I don’t know what the Lord has been saying to you. Maybe you are in the pilot’s position and God is the air traffic controller trying to give you direction for your life, or you are the passenger in the back of the plane. If God is giving you direction, follow His direction. There is a time to pray, seek God for answers, get counsel from your pastors, but there is also a time to act and do what God is saying to do. If God is telling you to take a position of rest and not fear, anxiety or worry, then be like the passenger in the back of the plane, enjoying their snacks and watching a good movie. God is going to get you where you need to be. You want to get there looking relaxed, not looking like you’ve aged 10 years. Believe God, He’s got this!
Love and blessings,
